Assignments
Since the very beginning in 1970, a core part of the FA's negotiations has to do with how assignments are made. The fundamental principles upon which these procedures are built have to do with seniority and equity.
Seniority is the backbone of most of our contract provisions, and this certainly true of assignments as made plain in Article V.A.d. Article V of the contract, which starts on page 20 of our contract pdf, contains most of the provisions about assignments: Section A addresses full-time faculty and Section B addresses adjunct faculty. There are numerous other references to assignments in the contract, such as in Appendix J with regard to assignments to distance education courses, but the core principles that the FA has supported for decades underscores them all.
The FA has worked hard to make sure assignments are made in the most equitable way possible. This can be seen in how, for overload and adjunct assignments, everyone gets one assignment before anyone gets two, and everyone gets two assignments before anyone gets three.
If you aren't sure that your assignments have been made in accordance with these principles of seniority and equity, contact the FA so we can look into the matter.
